Gifts of Knowledge

Carla Blumberg, B.S. ’83, has a lifelong connection to The University of Texas at Austin. “My granddad’s name is on a plaque on the Tower and my granddad and mom were both UT regents,” Carla said. However, it wasn’t just her deep connection to UT but her love of knowledge that was the deciding factor in including the Forty Acres in her estate plan.

When Carla was a student one of her favorite places on campus was the Perry-Castañeda Library. She still visits the library every time she is back in Austin. “I was older when I attended UT and I found the gaining of scientific literacy to be extremely pleasurable,” Carla shared. “Anything that I wanted to learn I could find in the amazing library system.”

She decided that she wanted to support programs that encouraged creativity, leadership and fostered a lifelong love of learning. The College of Liberal Arts and the Plan II Honors Program were perfect choices.

Carla’s estate plan established two scholarships that will benefit the College of Liberal Arts. One is for Plan II undergraduates and the other one will support a graduate fellowship in the English department.

“Plan II and COLA students are taught to think critically and about the larger picture, and the program is important to the university,” Carla said. “I feel that public higher education is extremely important to our society, now more than ever. The fact that Texans are provided the privilege to attend a public university like UT is really wonderful, and something that we should never lose.”
