Growing up amidst the vibrant landscapes of the Lone Star State, native Houstonian Carol Crawford has always held a deep appreciation and curiosity of the world in which we live.

“My father had degrees in civil engineering and geology, so I guess you could say I was reared with conversations of the oil and gas industry and vacations focused on fossils and rocks,” she laughs.

Carol’s pursuits to become an educator were nurtured by her parents. Both parents were on the faculty and retired from The University of Houston. It was only natural for Carol to find her path in the world of academia. Along the way she met Weyman Crawford, a geologist who graduated from the Jackson School of Geosciences and they became lifelong partners. Most vacations were spent driving West, visiting state and national parks, collecting rocks and looking at fossils.

Weyman’s connection to the Jackson School ran deep, shaping his academic and professional journey. As a tribute to Weyman, Carol documented a future gift in her will to support geoscience students.

“The University of Texas and the Jackson School meant so much to us,” she says. “This was an opportunity to honor Weyman’s legacy by giving back to the University that enabled him to have a great career and foster so many incredible experiences.”

The Carol and Weyman Crawford Internship Endowment serves as a means of support for aspiring geoscientists and embodies the couple’s shared commitment to fostering academic opportunity and excellence. Carol’s generosity and dedication ensure that Weyman’s legacy remains an integral part of the geosciences field, influencing and shaping the academic pursuits of generations to come.

“I want to provide students who have the merit to attend UT with opportunities in a competitive career and to become lifelong learners,” says Carol.
