Creating a World of Opportunities

Linnet Deily

Linnet Deily ’67

Receiving a world-class education from The University of Texas at Austin gave Linnet Deily the foundation she needed to take on global adventures. After graduating with a B.A. in Government in 1967 and a M.A. in International Management at UT Dallas in 1976, Linnet began a career in finance that eventually took her far from the Forty Acres. From 2001 to 2005, Linnet served as a deputy U.S. trade representative and U.S. ambassador to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.

Linnet has made a gift to allow future Longhorns to follow their passions and dreams, wherever they may lead. Her decision to establish the Linnet F. Deily Endowed Presidential Scholarship was based in a desire to help others expand their worlds — and their minds.

“One of the most important things UT taught me,” says Linnet, “was how to think critically about issues — to hear a variety of perspectives and then determine what my perspective was so I could formulate a reaction and move forward. Learning how to think critically is the best skill education gives you.”

A Spirit of Gratitude

A fourth-generation Texan, Linnet has made a bequest to provide continued support for her scholarship, demonstrating her belief that creating opportunities for upcoming scholars is the key to making a powerful impact and leaving a lasting legacy.

“Philanthropy is largely motivated by a spirit of gratitude for good fortune in life,” says Linnet, “whether you’re able to give a gift large or small. There are very few opportunities to make as much of a difference in someone’s life as giving them access to education. If you can open doors for young people and expand their opportunities, you’ll help change those lives forever.”
