Carrying Forward a Father’s Love

Mary Taylor Henderson

Mary Taylor Henderson honored her alumnus father by creating scholarships in his name through a gift that pays her income for life.

Mary Taylor Henderson has special memories of her father, Vincent Frank “V.F.” Taylor (B.A., L.L.B. ’41), a World War II veteran she describes as a “dyed-in-the-wool Longhorn.” After V.F. passed away in 1995, Mary honored his military service and his love of The University of Texas at Austin by creating a charitable remainder trust (CRT) that will provide scholarships for veterans and students who, like her father, come from small towns in Texas.

Mary’s CRT helps her achieve many of her philanthropic goals, providing her with access to funds needed for maintenance of the property her parents left to her while also helping her create a legacy for the future. With the benefits of an immediate tax deduction and income from the CRT for her lifetime, Mary is building a solid foundation for herself and for generations to come.

Paying tribute to her father’s service and dedication to others also gives Mary a great feeling. “My father loved UT and valued the education he received,” she says. “I’m proud to create a legacy in his name to assist veterans and rural Texans as they join the Longhorn family.”
