A Foundation for the Future

Chandra Family

The Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering holds the promise of shaping the future through groundbreaking discoveries.

Since graduating in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, Sanjay Chandra has enjoyed a diverse and successful career. Whether devoting his energy to computer integrated manufacturing systems, furniture manufacturing, or managing a private equity investment firm, Sanjay has met each new challenge with an emphasis on forward thinking and teamwork.

For 16 years, Sanjay has served as managing partner for Trinity Investors, a Texas-based private equity firm comprised of traditional private equity, real estate, energy and growth investments. In this role, he partners with management teams in successful companies to develop and expand their infrastructure, systems and operations to new levels. With similar intentions, Sanjay and his family — wife Manisha and children Deepak, B.S. ’18, Shivani and Malini — gave a generous gift in 2022 to the Cockrell School’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, now named for the Chandra family. In the same spirit of innovation Sanjay brings to his professional ventures, the Chandras’ transformative gift supports creative solutions and breakthrough research.

“UT’s commitment to excellence and its unwavering dedication to making a positive impact resonates deeply with my values,” says Sanjay. “Knowing our contributions can nurture the Cockrell School’s next generation of brilliant minds is a source of great pride and motivation.”

One of the areas the Chandras’ gift supports is artificial intelligence and the intersection of health and engineering. Among the many AI robotics projects currently underway at the Chandra Family Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is a wheelchair that allows patients with severe motor impairments to translate thoughts into movement.

“UT Austin has a distinct advantage in fostering AI robotics solutions due to its interdisciplinary approach,” says Sanjay. “By bringing together top minds and fostering collaboration between engineers, medical professionals and experts in various domains, UT positions itself as a hub for driving AI robotics innovation.”

Thanks to Sanjay’s strong vision and the Chandra family’s generous gift, UT researchers have the support and resources they need to continue their efforts to advance knowledge and the practical application of AI robotics.
