A Legacy of Philanthropy for the Next Generation

Alumna’s Gift Celebrates Her Father’s Lifelong Generosity

Susan Blount

Susan Blount, B.A. '78, J.D. '81, gives back to Texas Law through a variety of meaningful planned gifts and a scholarship endowment.

Susan Blount, B.A. '78, J.D. '81, a founder of the Center for Women in Law, grew up believing in the importance of education. Her family used to joke that they had more education than money between them. But it was her father's generosity, along with those beliefs, that inspired Susan's gifts to The University of Texas at Austin School of Law.

When Susan's father passed away, she came across his giving ledger. The family was struck by the number of organizations he supported and the amount he had given throughout his life. Susan decided to give to the University that played such an important role in her life by establishing the Susan L. Blount Endowment for Excellence Scholarship in Law, which is awarded once a year to high-achieving Texas Law students.

"I am grateful that Texas Law gave me a great and affordable education that prepared me for a successful career," she said. "I give to Texas Law because I want to provide similar opportunities for a new generation of talented law students."

A Fitting Memorial

Susan, who is vice chair of the Board of Trustees for the University of Texas Law School Foundation, has also included the Law School in her estate plans. Texas Law is the beneficiary of her donor-advised fund, which will support her scholarship. She also changed the beneficiary designation of the IRA that she received from her father to the Law School — a fitting memorial to a man who taught her about the importance of giving.

Lifetime and planned gifts such as Susan's ensure that Texas Law will continue to be a top-tier school that recruits deserving, extraordinary students and prepares them for careers at the highest levels of the legal and public affairs professions.
